Married Away – Dos and Don’ts of Planning a Destination Wedding

Somehow, planning a destination wedding can be a bit more time consuming than a traditional wedding. However, the earlier you begin your planning for your destination wedding, the greater the likehood for it to go well. Here are some dos and don’ts to consider:

Dos

1. Sacrifice some control over the details. Learn to delegate.

2. Hire an experienced wedding planner to assist.

3. Do your homework and use the Internet.

4. Take into account hidden costs of a long distance wedding.

5. Send out save-the-date cards to provide guests advanced notice and significant lead time to arrange their schedules.

6. Leave yourself plenty of time to pack before the big day.

7. Call the airlines ahead of time to make special arrangements if you’re checking-in or hand carrying your wedding gown.

8. Provide alternative accommodation choices for budget conscious guests.

9. Factor in currency exchange rates when planning a wedding away from your home country.

10. Relax, stay focused and enjoy the special time.

Don’ts

1. Micromanage the wedding plans.

2. Have a wedding during peak season when prices are high.

3. Take offence when guests decline your invitation. Your idea of a destination wedding may not match their budget especially if you are expecting them to pay their own way.

4. Be rigid in planning a long distance wedding. Things may not turn out as expected.

5. Start planning last minute; you’ll make the worst decisions then.

6. Need to have it at far-flung destinations.

7. Leave details about the wedding destination from your guests. They need to be kept in the loop to get started on their travel arrangements.

8. Fret over minor details. Small glitches may occur and be beyond your control.

9. Focus only on location. There are other important factors to consider such as cost and weather.

10. Only have one plan. Prepare a backup plan for the 'just in case' situation.

So happy planning!
